- Teacher – enrolment for the project is ongoing. Sign up.
The National Education Day we celebrate today is an excellent opportunity to encourage post-primary school teachers to take part in a project carried out by UOKiK and the LexCultura Foundation: “Youth with rights @ modern times”. We have prepared dedicated workshops for educators to introduce consumer issues and present content and course of classes with the students. The meetings will also be aimed at presenting the website konsument.edu.pl based on which lesson plans were created.
- Educating young people about cyber security, Internet fraud, developing secure behaviour and consumer habits online are issues to which I give top priority. Post-primary school students are young consumers who can be extremely vulnerable to traps set by dishonest vendors or phishing attacks. It is worth equipping them with the knowledge and skills to recognize and handle situations that could expose them to loss of private information or funds – says Tomasz Chróstny, President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection.
Funded by UOKiK, the project “Youth with rights @ modern times” aims to provide around 1,000 educational lessons to more than 21,000 students by the end of 2023. More than 120 public and non-public post-primary schools from across the country are expected to participate in the project. Enrolment for schools to be included in the project is ongoing, you can find the enrolment form on the LexCultura Foundation website. Trained teachers and consumer experts – experienced lawyers and consumer advocates – will introduce their students to the challenges and risks they may face in today’s digital world. Educators will receive substantive support at every stage of the project – from providing free materials, training, to helping them give lessons to their students.
Teaching classes are intended for two age groups. Post-primary school students in grades 1 and 2 will learn about secure online shopping, while older grades will focus on secure online finances. The lecturers will also educate the youth about key consumer concepts and basic consumer rights. The lesson plans prepared as part of the project are inspired by materials available at konsument.edu.pl. The platform offers a social network simulator with 10 events-traps which can be realistically encountered online, including shopping scam, BLIK code phishing scam, subscription trap, alternative investments, pyramid scheme, and charity scam. The site is an engaging educational tool for teachers and older students to promote consumer rights on the Internet.
This is yet another educational activity that UOKiK has prepared with young consumers in mind. Enrolment for kindergartens for the “Young Consumer 101” project is still ongoing, and parents and carers of children aged 4-5 and their teachers can use the materials and tools available at malykonsument.uokik.gov.pl free of charge.
