< previous | next > 06.07.2022
- Today, UOKiK was paid a visit by the representatives of La Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) – the Spanish competition authority.
- During the meeting, the employees of both institutions discussed, among others, issues concerning eliminating abuses in the energy sector, combating illegal agreements between enterprises, imposing fines on individuals, and ongoing proceedings conducted by both authorities.
Today, UOKiK is hosting a visit by Cani Fernandez, President of the Spain’s National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), who, along with CNMC representatives, visited the Office at the invitation of Tomasz Chróstny, President of UOKiK. This is the first visit of CNMC representatives to UOKiK. The purpose of the meeting is to present the competences of both institutions, share experience, among others, in terms of eliminating abuses in the energy sector, combating illegal agreements between enterprises, and imposing fines on individuals. The presidents of both offices also discussed the proceedings conducted by the Offices, including those concerning digital markets.
The representatives of the Spanish competition authority will share their experience in the functioning of their office during the pandemic, including remote inspections and advocacy initiatives handled by CNMC.
The meeting was also an opportunity to address the issue of CNMC becoming involved in UOKiK’s efforts to support the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU). Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection has been taking steps to support AMCU and provide its employees with a safe haven in Poland and the necessary assistance. UOKiK wants to include authorities from EU Member States and international institutions in its efforts to improve the competencies of the Ukrainian antitrust authority, which are scheduled for the second half of the year.
- Sharing knowledge and experience with UOKiK’s counterparts from other countries is of great importance to us. Thanks to close bilateral cooperation and learning about solutions applied by other competition authorities, we can perform our tasks even more effectively, and thus serve the Polish economy. The CNMC’s experience is particularly valuable to us, as the authority is responsible not only for competition policy, but also acts as a regulator in several sectors” – says Tomasz Chróstny, President of UOKiK.
CNMC was established in 2013 from the integration of six bodies: The National Competition Commission, the National Energy Commission, the Telecommunications Market Commission, the National Postal Sector Commission, the State Audiovisual Council, and the Railway and Airport Regulatory Commission.
