Drivers, it is time to get winter tyres!
< previous | next > 10.11.2021
- Are your tyres adapted to severe driving conditions? Do they have proper ice grip? You can find this information on new information labels that were introduced in May 2021.
- New labelling and pictograms – we explain what they mean.
- We advise what to look for when buying tyres.
Every driver faces the need to purchase tyres for their car. Especially before winter, we are searching for proper and safe tyres, appropriate for the weather conditions. Therefore, it is useful to learn how to read information on the labels, which are placed directly on tyres or in their vicinity, e.g. on a rack. In the case of online purchases, we should also be able to access detailed data about the product.
Change in tyre labelling
As a result of the EU regulation, tyre labelling has changed on 1 May 2021. This means that from then on, products placed on the market should have new labels. What is new is that the number of classes has been reduced to five (A to E). This means that the worst-performing tyres, i.e. those in class F and G, will disappear from the market. The regulation also introduced new pictograms that indicate the suitability of the tyres for use in icy and snowy conditions. In effect, they illustrate how they perform in different winter conditions. The new labels continue to use the same three ratings as before: fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise level. However, some of them have been redesigned to resemble household appliance labels (notice on new energy labels).
"Thanks to the new information on the labels, drivers will be able to make more informed choices when purchasing tyres and better match them to the expected driving conditions. Consumers will gain more control over the safety and economic efficiency of their car. As winter is approaching, please pay special attention to additional designations that provide information about the grip of the car on snowy and icy surfaces. We encourage you to choose tyres with low noise levels and ones that reduce fuel consumption," says Tomasz Chróstny, the President of UOKiK.
