#UOKiKtestuje - baby diaper testing
  • Check which disposable diapers will suit your baby best.
  • The employees of UOKiK laboratories carried out a total of 230 different tests.
  • Visit uokik.gov.pl and see the latest  #UOKiKtestuje report (only in Polish).

Choosing the right diapers for a baby may make many parents a bit dizzy and frustrated. It is when the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection comes to the rescue. In UOKiK accredited laboratories in Lublin and £ód¼ we tested 10 diaper brands in size "3”, intended for children of 4 to 10 kg. They were selected by the Trade Inspection Authority on the basis of a market research conducted. Download the report #UOKiKtestuje.

Which brands were examined?

How did we check diapers?

We poured three doses of 50 ml of sodium chloride solution each, which was equivalent to urine in our study, onto each diaper. In this way, we investigated how quickly a diaper absorbs fluid and how much fluid would flow out of it once a pressure is applied on the diaper. Note: Remember that the diaper absorbs water faster than the test solution, so if you carry out tests with water, you will receive different results. At the next stage, we immersed each diaper for 30 minutes in sodium chloride solution to see how much of it the diaper can absorb. We also know how important strong and flexible fasteners are, so we stretched each product on a special machine. We have also assessed the pH of the material in contact with the skin of the baby. “In yet another edition of the series titled "UOKiK tests", we compared 10 brands of disposable diapers, which we examined in our accredited laboratories. Tests carried out by UOKiK are reliable, independent and credible. The parameters we analyze are always chosen with the consumer in mind so as to provide useful information and valuable assessments. The results of the diaper test also turned out to be a big surprise for us, especially with regard to the brands which probably enjoy the best market recognition in Poland. However, I do believe that once you read the  report, it will be a bit easier for you to choose a right diaper,” says President of UOKiK Tomasz Chróstny.

Results of our tests

Total absorbency

Tibelly, Kindii pure & flex and Bella baby happy diapers absorbed fluid the most. Pampers active baby, Dada extra care and Babydream absorbed fluid the least.

653 grams - this is the highest quantity of liquid absorbed at one time by one diaper - the highest result in this category. The lowest is 406 grams.

Absorption time

Babydream, Huggies ultra comfort, Pampers active baby, Bevola baby diapers and Dada extra care diapers absorbed the liquid the fastest. The longest - Auchan baby comfort.

The shortest average absorption time was 6.46 seconds, while the longest average absorption time was 36.72 seconds.

Moisture released through the diaper

We immersed the diapers in the sodium chloride solution three times and then placed a weight on each of them. This way, we tested how a wet diaper would react to the weight of the baby. Babydream, Bevola baby diapers, Lupilu premium comfort, Kindii pure & flex, Huggies ultra comfort and Tibelly diapers released the least amount of moisture. The most amount of moisture - by Pampers active baby.

The best result was 0.21 grams - on average, this is how many grams of fluid the tested diaper would release when pressed. The highest – 6.7 grams on average.

Diaper's resistance to unfastening

The best result was achieved by Bella baby happy diapers. This means that the diaper fastener holds firmly and the diaper will not fall off when the baby moves. It was easiest to unfasten Kindii pure & flex, Pampers active baby, Dada extra care, Auchan baby comfort, Bevola baby nappies and Tibelly.

Fastener’s resistance to detachment

The Dada extra care diaper fastener was the most durable.  The least durable fasteners were in the following diapers: Pampers active baby, Lupilu premium comfort, Auchan baby comfort, and Bevola baby nappies, which means these fasteners are most likely to break off while putting the diaper on.

Diaper price

We divided the price of the package by the number of diapers and based on that we calculated how much you will pay for one diaper. Lupilu premium comfort diapers turned out to be the cheapest - the cost of one item is 41 groszy.

pH of the diaper material

We had no objections to the pH of the layer of diaper material that has contact with the skin.

 QUALITY RANKING

On the basis of laboratory tests, we assessed the overall quality of the diapers. We have taken into account the results of the tests and granted points from 1 to 10. In this way, we have created a quality ranking where Babydream and Huggies ultra comfort ranked first.

Performance characteristics

Apart from laboratory tests, we have also checked the performance characteristics of the diapers. The moisture index, which changes colour when the diaper is wet, was available for Dada extra care, Kindii pure & flex and Tibelly. Thanks to special channels, moisture is drained away faster - you can find them in following brands: Babydream, Bevola baby nappies, Dada extra care, Huggies ultra comfort, Lupilu premium comfort and Pampers active baby.

A proper fit of a diaper to the baby's body is important - it is ensured by a proper shape of an absorbent insert, as well as an extra banding at the back (in Huggies ultra comfort diapers and Kindii pure & flex diapers) and a side tape and elastic ruffles (available in all tested products).

Most of the tested brands have packaging with handles to make them easier to carry. Some of them also offer additional functionality - a special opening that makes it easier to take the diaper out (Auchan baby comfort, Babydream, Bella baby happy, Lupilu premium comfort, Pampers active baby).
