Heat-resistant dishes - an audit by the Trade Inspection Authority
  • The Trade Inspection Authority examined nearly 200 batches of heat-resistant dishes made of ceramics and glass.
  • Almost 42 percent of them raised its concerns.
  • Irregularities included too low resistance to high temperatures and lack of instructions for safe use.

Are you planning to buy heat-resistant dishes? Be careful, the Trade Inspection Authority examined 191 batches of such products and questioned 80 of them (almost 42 percent). The audit took place in the 2nd quarter of 2019 at 54 undertakings from 13 provinces. Inspectors audited mainly retailers and wholesalers, but also visited several manufacturers, an importer and a first distributor.

Most breaches related to labeling. For this reason, the inspectors questioned 73 product batches. Irregularities included primarily the lack of information about the temperature at which the dish can be used, incomplete instructions for safe use and maintenance, and in the case of nearly one-third of the questioned products - the absence of any labeling and instructions. All undertakings voluntarily improved the labeling, the majority did so even during the inspection.

Samples of 19 batches of heat-resistant dishes were tested in a laboratory. It turned out that as many as 10 of them, that is, more than half, have insufficient resistance to high temperatures. During the tests, they cracked in an oven preheated to 180 degrees Celsius. All batches questioned during the laboratory tests were withdrawn from sale. After the audit, UOKiK initiated eight administrative proceedings. In the other two cases, explanatory proceedings are under way.

When buying heat-resistant dishes, make sure that:

  • the maximum temperature at which the dish can be used is specified on the product or packaging;
  • an instruction in Polish is attached - it should include, e.g., information on the maximum temperature, material from which the dish is made, how to use it and how to maintain it;
  • the dish has no sharp edges or burrs that can cause cuts,
  • handles can be held, e.g., with a kitchen glove; they should also be made of a material that is resistant to high temperatures and does not release toxins under such conditions;
  • the dish should not have unnecessary corners, grooves and decorations that make it difficult to clean.

If you have any doubts or concerns about the products offered, notify the Trade Inspection Authority.
