Poland's consumer protection Authority scrutinising telecom sim card registration advertisements
< previous | next > 14.11.2016
Telecommunications services advertisements should be clear, reliable and honest. UOKiK is looking at how the four largest operators in Poland inform consumers of promotions for registering prepaid telephone cards
Consumers using a prepaid SIM card must register it with a telecommunications operator by 1 February 2017. Pursuant to Poland’s Act on antiterrorist activities, cards that have not been registered by then will be deactivated. Seeking to appeal to subscribers, the telecommunications companies are offering a variety of perks, including additional funds, minutes or data. Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has opened preliminary proceedings to look at the ads P4, Polkomtel, Orange Polska and T-Mobile Polska are running to convince people to register with them.
According to UOKiK President Marek Niechciał, the Authority will determine whether „the information provided in the ads is clear for clients and doesn’t mislead them, and whether consumers have been adequately informed of the period they have to use the perks being offered. Aside from the bonus minutes or data, it is important for the users to know how and when they can take advantage of them.”
Preliminary proceedings are being conducted in the case, not against the undertakings.
