Beware of magnet toys

Nearly 4.5 thousand Mega Brands magnetic toys pose a safety risk to children. The Polish distributor of the products informed the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection of the recall of the toys

Zapf Creation Polska, the distributor of Mega Brands products, informed the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection that Mega Brands Magtastik and Magnetix Jr magnetic toys may constitute a safety risk to children. By mid-March 2008 4.466 units had been placed on the Polish market.

The information submitted to the Office shows that the reason for recalling the toys is the fact that the magnets may come loose and, when swallowed, can pose a serious risk to a child’s life. The recall - concerning both the European and the American markets - is the manufacturer’s reaction to tests conducted in the USA. So far no accidents have been reported.

Bearing in mind kids’ safety, the company is recalling several dozen of models of Mega Brands toys. Not all of them have been introduced to the Polish market, however, as some of the unsafe models may have been bought via the Internet or abroad we are enclosing the full list of recalled toys together with the information if and in what way they have been distributed in Poland.

Consumers who have bought the toys under recall and have retained the receipt can return them at the place of purchase and get the money back from the seller. The persons who do not have the proof of purchase can send the defective product to the Polish distributor of the toys at the following address: Zapf Creation, ul. Poleczki 23, 02-822 Warszawa. The company assures that they will replace the sent product with a safe toy of comparable value.

For more information on the recall please phone +48 22 335 21 76 or e-mail [SCODE]c2FsZXMtcG9sc2thQHphcGYtY3JlYXRpb24uY29t[ECODE].

According to the Act on general product safety both manufacturers and distributors are obliged to inform UOKiK each time they learn that one of the products they introduced on the market is not safe. The amendment of the Act authorises the President of UOKiK to impose a fine of PLN 100 thousand on an enterprise.
